30DC Preseason Lesson 5: YouTube

By Dee-Dee M | June 24, 2009

box-youtubeYouTube – Signing In & Subscribing to Channels

YouTube is essential to the 30 Day Challenge and it is the preferred host for the 30DC video lessons.

Like Google, YouTube is a powerhouse information provider, an amazing resource, and is second only to Google for the most searched site. Millions of avid watchers go to YouTube on a daily basis to view content about their favorite TV show, film clips, animations, comedians, hobbies and interests, crazy stunts, and educational videos.

My daughters both watch more YouTube videos than TV! One of the reasons for this is that they have control of what and when they watch and are not at the mercy of the television programmers and schedules.

GuruBob takes us through the YouTube sign up process and how to subscribe to your favourite YouTube Channels.

How to Use YouTube – 7:03min video

Go to YouTube.com and sign up if you don’t have an account already. If you would like to learn how to do this go to Ed Dale’s video lesson from the 2008 30DC here: YouTube Videos for Best Video

If you link your Google account to your YouTube account you can sign into YouTube using your Google account login.

To find all the 30 Day Challenge videos is to do a search for “eddale” as they are all hosted on his account. (Ed has been with YouTube for a some time now so his account has extra privileges like no 10min time limit etc.) Once you have got to Ed’s Channel click the subscribe button so you will be notified by email when he adds more videos.

YouTube Desciption Box

On a video page you will notice on the top right there is a video discription box where there is a brief decription, URLs and tags for the video.

TIP: When you upload your own videos remember to add these elements to them as YouTube can provide good volumes of free traffic to your site.

YouTube Video Feedback

Each video has a rating system and comment area. If you like a video rate it. If you’d like to make a comment on the video, do so.

TIP: Whenever you comment on someone else’s video a link back to your YouTube Profile is created; so offering good quality comments is a good way to get links back to your own videos.

Related Video Results

Each video page also contains two sets of results. “More from ‘user’” and “Related Videos”.

By using the “More from user” results you can search for other video uploaded by this user that interest you.

The “Related Videos” results show videos from different users that have similar subject matter which is determined by the tags used. (Another good reason to use tags for your own videos)
