30DC Preseason Lesson 13: Social Bookmarking
By Dee-Dee M | July 12, 2009
Social Bookmarking is part of a broader concept of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
SEO used to be the domain of the “SEO Experts”, unavailable to a major portion of the webmaster crowd and shrouded in mystery. SEO in simple terms is taking a few steps to help the search engine rank your site higher.
The goal is to be on the first page in the number one position for your targeted search term in order to get more traffic to your site. The more people you have visiting your site they more likely you will get visitors to see your product ads and click on them to make sales.
Traffic = Money
A major part of SEO is to build links back to your site from other sites. Sometimes referred to as getting “Link Love”. In general the more sites that link back to us the higher our search engine rank. One of the easiest ways to get this ‘link love” is through Social Bookmarking.
Michelle McPherson shows us the basic principles of social bookmarking and how to get link love from multiple Social Bookmarking sites quickly.

Many sites that you visit may have icons that allow you to bookmark that page on a social bookmarking network.
To bookmark a link or page on a Social Bookmarking site site you first need to create an account on that bookmarking site. You set up a basic profile with your name, email and maybe your interests and once created you can add bookmarks to your profile/account.
Social Bookmarking Basics
There are a few basic things required in order to bookmark a web page…
- SB Accounts: An Account login to the Bookmarking Service
- URL: The web address/link of the page you wish to bookmark
- Notes/Details/Description: (Called different things depending on the SB site.) This is a brief description of the page you are bookmarking to jog your memory and tell others who vist this bookmark what the page is about (TIP: use keywords in your description)
- Tags: Keywords that will link to this bookmark. These tags become the ‘anchor text’ of your bookmark link. Some Social Bookmarking site separate tags with spaces or commas. For those that use commas you can use long tail keyword phrases as tags.
Creating Bookmarks on these networks allows other users and more importantly the search engines to find them. The search engine sees this link as a vote for this website or webpage as being important or interesting.
Streamlining the Social Bookmarking Process
There are a lot of social bookmarking sites to choose from and it can be time consuming logging into to each one and copying and pasting the details of your bookmark to each and every one of them.
Thankfully there are a few social bookmarking submission sites that speeds up this process; Onlywire, Social Marker, Social Poster and Socializer, to name a few.
The Service recommended by the 30 Day Challenge is SocialMarker.com
Social marker.com allows us to submit to multiple social bookmarking sites and services by filling in the details just once. In order to use SocialMarker.com you need to create an account for each of the sites listed.
TIP: To create accounts on multiple sites quickly try using a form filler tool like LastPass.com. You can download the LastPass plugin for your browser, create a profile and let the plugin fill in your details like username, name, address, email, etc.
Once you have your account set up it is a simple matter of going to SocialMarker.com, filling in the bookmark details, and hitting the submit button. SocialMarker will fill in the form for each site and submit your bookmark.
Social Bookmarking is only one strategy to build backlinks to your site but is quick and easy so we will be using it during the 30 Day Challenge to send traffic to our sites to test whether our niche is worthwhile or not.
